Numerous new fashion trends are on the horizon as autumn approaches. Choosing where to start might be a little overwhelming when it comes to shoes, purses, and outerwear, but denim is always a favorite, and this year it may offer some of the most surprising (and defining) trends of the season. There are plenty of ways to change up your go-to jeans this year, from cutting-edge hues and designs to a few nostalgic comebacks. We consulted EB Denim founder Elena Bonvicini and Depop trend guru Agus Panzoni to learn more about what’s coming this season. Continue reading to learn about 2024’s top autumn denim trends, along with styling advice and shopping recommendations.

Creative Silhouettes Denim Trends

Although barrel and horseshoe designs started to become popular last autumn, this season will see a major influx of the style, characterized by a tapering ankle and a roomy knee. Agus Panzoni, head of trends at Depop, says, “Recent denim trends have shown so much play on silhouettes; styles like horseshoe jeans and barrel jeans re-imagine the oversized denim look for a more structured option.” He also notes that searches for barrel jeans have increased by 157% since the beginning of this year and by 217% year over year on the platform. Elena Bonvicini, founder of EB denim, also saw the growth of the horseshoe silhouette: “I’m seeing new explorations of that shape in more exaggerated and understated ways,” she tells Byrdie.

Cuff It Denim Trends

“I’m thrilled that cuffed jeans are making a comeback,” Panzoni said. Although the practical look is set to dominate this season, this styling tip for avoiding a hem might not appear like a trend. By introducing styles that come pre-cuffed, companies like Reformation and Abercrombie & Fitch are validating the emerging trend. The great thing about this trend is that you don’t have to buy new pants to wear it: To make the cuffed look yourself, turn the bottom of any pair up.

Skinny Jeans Revival Denim Trends

Whether you like it or not, one of the most contentious 2010s trends is returning this season. “We’re also seeing the return of skinny jeans, likely thanks to 2010s nostalgia and the people looking to revive the aesthetics of indie sleaze,” Panzoni explains. “Skinny jeans have seen a 74% increase in searches year-over-year, while indie sleaze has seen a 43% increase in searches on Depop.”

Baggy silhouettes are still popular, even though slim jeans are making a comeback. “Baggy jeans have become a wardrobe staple at this point,” Panzoni informs us. “There are so many variations and silhouettes you can choose from, so there’s a style or fit for everyone, and there will always be a new iteration throughout the seasons.”

Ultra-Dark Wash

Darker is better when it comes to washing this autumn. “I’ve been on the hunt for a pair of long, dark-wash denim jeans,” Panzoni shares. The midnight blue hue was particularly popular in the autumn 2024 runway designs, where Versace, Carolina Herrera, and Tory Burch were among the designers who used it. Panzoni credits the surge in popularity of the wash to the growing trend of minimalism. “Depop has seen a huge 585% increase in searches for minimalism this year, with dark-wash denim searches increasing by 20%,” according to her.

Straight to the Point

Speaking of going back to basics, simplicity is the emphasis of another well-liked denim trend for autumn 2024. “The high-rise straight is coming back, which is a classic ’90s off-duty model style,” Bonvicini asserts. The timeless look, which draws inspiration from celebrities like Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, and Cindy Crawford, is an essential wardrobe item that you may already own. Straight-leg jeans are a simple way to stay in style if you’re not convinced about the thin jeans renaissance.

White Out

The “no white after Labour Day” rule is no longer in effect (and is just plain absurd), and Panzoni believes that washes of all stripes will be popular in autumn. White denim may become popular in the autumn along with dark washes. “Harsher colors and shades create a cleaner aesthetic and more opportunity for monochrome and simple looks in an outfit,” adds Panzoni. Additionally, she reports that Depop witnessed an 83% increase in white denim searches. Other fall-approved washes are cream or off-white if pure white seems too harsh.
