One of those eye makeup looks that work for anything from a red carpet to date night to drinks with friends is a smokey eye look that will steal the show.

In any type of appearance, a smokey eye is required for that star-quality glitz. To produce a “smokey” appearance, black eyeshadow and eyeliner are blended into lighter eyeshadow. It has a wide range of applications depending on the color, sultry to rebellious. The smokey eye may appear intimidating at first, but it’s actually a simple eye makeup look after I show you how to do it step by step.

It’s all about blending in with this look. It’s a blended or diffused eyeshadow that adds dimension rather than a single block color. You can use a single shade and smoke it out around the edges, but most people like myself prefer to overlay several shades and textures.

Before you attempt a smoky eye look , you’ll need to know this;

DARKEST COLOR

Keep the darkest shade of eyeshadow along the lash line(the lid)at all times. It maintains the makeup looking trendy and fresh while also ensuring that you attract more attention to your eyes.

BE STRICTLY MINIMALISTIC

To make your eyes pop, use no more than three shadows and a liner.

BLENDING IS ESSENTIAL!

Blend, blend, blend, blend, blend, blend, Brushes are also essential for properly blending your eyeshadow. It doesn’t matter how dark you go or what colors you use when it comes to a smoky eye; it’s all about how effectively you can blend everything together. That’s what gives it its sensuous appearance.

Here’s What You’ll Need For a Smokey Eye Look.

EYESHADOW PRIMER

This is to get your eyelid ready for your eyeshadow. Allows for a smoother application of makeup, as well as the retention of eyeshadow and the prevention of creasing. On the lids, you can also use a concealer.

EYESHADOW

You’ll need three complementing eyeshadow colors to make your smokey eye: an all-over shade, a crease color, and a highlight. Consider investing in a palette with a combination of shimmer and matte colors that may be used to create a variety of smokey eye effects.

BLENDING BRUSHES

A blending brush is essential for blending your shadows together smoothly and without sharp lines. If you’re a beginner, a more accurate blending brush will give you greater control.

FLAT EYESHADOW BRUSH

Use a flat eye shadow brush to pack on the eyeshadow and effectively transfer pigment from the eyeshadow palette onto your lid before starting to blend your smoky eye.

GEL EYELINER

It’s simple to produce a rich, blendable color with a gel eyeliner, which you can smear for a dramatic smoky eye or leave crisp for a cleaner, more minimal version of the look.

MASCARA

Mascara is a must-have for every smoky eye makeup.

Step-By-Step Instructions For 3 Of My FAVORITE Smokey Eye Looks

CLASSIC BLACK SMOKEY EYE LOOK

When you want to amp up the drama, skip the mid-toned neutrals and seek dark eyeshadows like charcoal blacks or very dark browns.

S1

Apply your favorite primer to your eyelids.

S2

Fill your entire lid with your black gel liner or black eyeliner, which will assist to emphasize the smokiness.

S3

Using your flat makeup brush, pat a black eyeshadow over the top of the liner.

S4

Begin blending with your blending brush after gently dragging the color into your crease. Short upward strokes are recommended. Keep gradually blurring out the edges to remove the hard-line. You can do this with a fluffy blending brush. Concentrate on merging the shadow outwards at the outer and inner corners of your eye (up towards your eyebrow).

S5

Blend the same black shadow downwards with your flat eyeshadow brush under your waterline.

S6

Apply eyeshadow with a clean eyeshadow brush. To highlight the brow bone, use a neutral, off-White, or Grey shimmer.

S7

To finish the smokey eye look, use mascara or strip lashes.

SOFT SMOKEY EYE LOOK

If you prefer to be a no-makeup makeup kind of person, ease into this eye look by producing a minimal smoky eye. Don’t go as dark with your shadows; instead, go for lighter tones.

S1

Prime your lids with a primer.

S2

To get this soft smokey eye look, start with a crease color that is orangey or nude. With your blending brush, sweep it all along your crease and blend it outwards.

S3

Apply a brown shade all over your lid using your flat eyeshadow brush. Lightly press the color onto the lids ( pressing the product on the lid is better than swiping it back and forth).

S4

Blend the edges where the dark shade and your crease shade meet with your blending brush for a smooth transition. Concentrate your blending in the lid’s outside corner.

S5

Using the tip of your flat eyeshadow brush, apply the dark shade all over your lower lash line. Lightly blend to remove any sharp edges

S6

Use a delicate eyeliner pencil or gel liner to line your upper lash line and waterline for added drama. You can blend your eyeliner outward almost  like a faded wing, for a more smoked-out look.

S7

Mascara brings the appearance together. Apply mascara to both your top and bottom lashes to complete this smokey eye look.

A BIT OF SHIMMER SMOKEY EYE LOOK

Adding a smidgeon of shimmer to the lids and inner corners helps brighten up the look and return the light to the eyes.

Shimmer Smokey Eye Look

S1

Always prime the eyelid first to prevent shadow fallout.

S2

Choose from a variety of eye colors. Instead, to achieve this smoky effect, use dark browns or even gray to soften the black shadow.

S3

Apply the color you’ve chosen as your all-over color to your lid using a flat eyeshadow brush. From the lower portion of your lid to the middle, blend it thoroughly. Bring the shadow all the way down to the waterline as well.

S4

Choose a complementing color that is two shades lighter than your lid color for the crease. So, if you used a dark brown on the lid, go into the crease with a lighter brown. Then blend the color into the outer corner of your eye with a blending brush. As you blend the color in little circular strokes toward the middle of your eyelid, it will look more like a gradient.

S5

On top of your eyeshadow shade that covers the entire lid. Apply a smidgeon of shimmer, such as a pearlescent white, white, or grey.

S6

From your crease to your brow bone, apply highlight, neutral shadows that are one to two shades lighter than your all-over color. This highlight shade will help to soften the appearance. To make your eyes look bright and alert, dab your highlighter on the inner corners of your eyes for a little more glow.

S7

Apply gel liner to your upper and lower lash lines, making sure to cover both.

S8

To finish the smokey eye look, use mascara or strip lashes.
