We all know that we can’t foretell the future, but the fashion industry does its best to predict fashion trends and what we’ll wear in the following seasons, from footwear to handbags to jewelry to color trends. In turn, seeing future fashion may unconsciously impact our moods and wishlists.
Whatever happens in six months, we can be sure that when the first hints of winter’s thaw appear, we’ll be excited for warmer and longer days ahead. The Spring/Summer 2023 fashions will reflect such emotions. Fortunately for us, we can begin shopping for them right away.
SHEER JOY
Sheer materials have been popular for numerous seasons, but never more so as for spring/summer 2023. It’s a highly sensual method to layer and lend a feeling of sultry intrigue to a look if you want to avoid the more usual pathways of minuscule hemlines and plunging necks, from dress overlays adding drama over a basic evening slip to more risqué lingerie-baring pieces.
All Denim Fashion Trends
It’s no secret that denim is a popular fabric, but the new wave of denim for spring will go beyond your regular jean category; the more denim, the better. From Alaa’s dramatic denim scarves to Chloé’s denim trench coats to Khaite’s uber-cool entire denim outfits, even jean skeptics (they do exist!) can find a denim piece to suit their aesthetic preferences. If you’re not persuaded on wearing denim from head to toe, Sonia Mosseri, Creative Director and Co-Founder of denim label Still Here, recommends matching the season’s maxi skirts—which have a throwback ’90s vibe—with a basic tank or cropped white shirt.
Purple Hues Fashion Trends
One of the top fashion color trends of 2022 is predicted to be a solid favorite in 2023. Lilac has been seen on everything from casual separates to special occasion outfits, and it appears that purple tones in general are here to stay.
While pastels were by far the most popular during New York Fashion Week, richer and darker colors came through at Ulla Johnson and looked especially beautiful coupled with lighter, lavender items for a tonal outfit. Tory Burch and Adam Lippes created the lightest variants, which were so delicate they could be mistaken for milk, revitalizing the now-standard spring 2023 palette.
Maximalism
Maximalism has taken the lead for a few seasons now, but if recent runway and social media trends are any indications, we’re heading back to fundamentals. A basics boom, on the other hand, is never complete without a few deviations from the standard — think jeans with distinctive elements like cargo pockets or contrast stitching, cargo trousers were taken into the dressier territory, and basic blouses with deconstructed or asymmetric necklines.
All Blue Fashion Trends
Fuchsia was clearly the color of 2022 (thanks, of course, to a certain Mr. Pierpaolo Piccioli, who launched the trend in March during Valentino’s AW22 display), but for SS23, the shade is pushed to the sidelines in favor of a vivid blue hue. Cobalt blue hasn’t been at the forefront of fashion trends in a long time, so its comeback is welcome. Splattered across everything from dresses to jackets, skirts, and even boots, you’ll want to get in on this trend before we overindulge and revert to our neutral wardrobes.
Leather Weather
Designers put their passion for leather on full show for spring with saturated leather office-appropriate items. Bulky outerwear gives way to elegant-fitting jackets and midi dresses when the temperature warms. “Think of leather pieces that are more supple and comfortable as a first layer—not just outerwear” for spring, says Abba. If you don’t want to wear leather, there are more vegan choices on the market thanks to designers that care about the environment, such as Stella McCartney and Nanushka.
Frothy and Feathery Fashion Trends
The fashion trends of 2023 made it apparent that romance was on the agenda, with tactile and floaty tulle and feathers gracing a variety of designs over New York’s eight-day fashion extravaganza. From full tulle skirts at Siriano and Molly Goddard, which followed this season’s volume trend, to dramatic hemlines at Herrera, which added drama to designs. This trend is the cherry on top of the occasionwear cake, with nearly meringue-like peaks of delicate fabric that will allow you to pirouette into a summer evening. Feather detailing was utilized to lend richness to thigh-skimming hems and maxi dresses, while a ’20s style feathery jacket was highlighted as something to wear over a dress next summer.
