A brand-new class of multihyphenates joined the stylish elite at the Met Gala 2023, the black-tie fundraising event for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, to ascend the museum’s historic steps and make their eagerly awaited debuts during fashion’s biggest night. Gaining an invitation offers the chance to secure one’s place in Met Gala history, whether a visitor was a first-time attendee or a seasoned veteran, as Met Gala outfits consistently make for iconic red-carpet fashion.
The Met Gala 2023 red carpet welcomed a range of designers from all over the world, with Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and Anna Wintour acting as the evening’s co-chairs.
“Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” this year’s theme, pays tribute to the late designer’s illustrious career in fashion. Lagerfeld had a career that spanned decades and fashion businesses. (Valium) He was a frequent visitor to the Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and a steadfast supporter of the Met Gala. His legacy lives on in his collections and inspires a slew of Met Gala red-carpet options thanks to his work designing for a number of high-end brands, including Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, and Chanel (where Lagerfeld served as creative director from 1983 until his death at age 85 in 2019).
To support the evening’s theme, Naomi Campbell, Dua Lipa, Gisele Bündchen, Nicole Kidman, Kristen Stewart, and Margaret Qualley all donned Chanel. Jared Leto, who wore a fursuit, and Doja Cat, who made her Met Gala debut by donning face prosthetics that made the rapper resemble a feline, both paid homage to the late designer’s cat, Choupette.
Lagerfeld famously stated, “I would like to be a one-man multinational fashion phenomenon,” and based on the different ways people interpreted this year’s theme on the Met Gala red carpet, he succeeded.
