The iconic music and culture scene of Manchester United in the early 1990s is honored with a limited-edition Stone Roses collection, which is the result of a collaboration between British football club Manchester United and athletic apparel giant Adidas.
An Originals Icon Jersey, designed by guitarist John Squire to honor the cover of The Stone Roses’ 1989 self-titled debut album, is part of the Manchester United x Stone Roses collection. The golden text of “The Stone Roses” within the collar and the red, white, and blue Adidas three stripes on the sleeves have been combined with the artwork.
Additionally, the words “This is the One” have been added to the lower portion of the Manchester United crest, and two lemon slices have been added in place of the footballs on each side.
The jersey is part of a lifestyle collection that also includes a bucket hat, black shorts, black tracksuit, long-sleeve T-shirt, scarf, and Manchester United badge that has been altered. The set also features the recognizable Stone Roses lemons.
“The Stone Roses music is probably the soundtrack playing in the heads of many fans that remember watching the famous class of ’92,” stated Inigo Turner, design director of Adidas, in a statement. The band and the squad both stood for international youth movements with Manchester at their core.
“With this collection, which beautifully embodies the fusion of Northern England football and musical culture, we’re excited to celebrate that relationship.”
The on-field display debuted on February 10 during Manchester United’s match against Aston Villa. It consists of a reversible anthem jacket and pre-match jersey in a greyscale rendition of the Stone Roses album artwork, with gold accents for the United badge, Adidas logo, and official sponsor.
The Stone Roses are a band that is intricately woven into the distinct Manchester United fan culture both locally and internationally, according to James Holroyd, chief commercial development officer of Manchester United. This compilation is the ideal approach to acknowledge our shared pasts in a way that appeals to both the younger and more seasoned followers.
Manchester United’s chief commercial development officer, James Holroyd, claims that the band The Stone Roses is deeply ingrained in the unique fan culture of the club both domestically and abroad. I think this compilation is the best way to honor our common history while yet appealing to our younger and more experienced fans.
“We’re thrilled to commemorate that partnership with this collection, which beautifully embodies the blending of musical and football culture in Northern England.”
