A person’s shoes can reveal a lot about them. You may have a taste for dad clothes if you always reach for functional trainers. If mesh flats are more your style, then you probably have a way of adding sensuality to your looks. And you have joie de vivre this summer if you fully embrace the comeback of jelly shoes. The rubbery design has a decidedly odd appearance with connotations of infancy. Its reappearance is all the more thrilling because of this.
You see, the aesthetic of the 1990s and 2000s is rife with whimsical nostalgia, in all its transparent, colourful artificiality. It’s without a doubt the most entertaining when it comes to strange shoe launches. (What other shoe frequently smells like delicious fruit?) Melissa, a Brazilian company, debuted a collection of retro jelly shoes in 2022. Then, Coach’s Spring 2023 collection had vibrant Fisherman-style items upfront. The Row’s September presentation of fishnet rubbery flats for its pre-fall 2024 collection solidified the resurgence even further. Additionally, Jennifer Lawrence’s consistent endorsement of the footwear option on street style excursions has given it a modern aesthetic appeal.
Now that jelly shoes are back, why?
Whether you like them or not, there is a certain flowing meaning to the unusual shoes. Leaving behind the limitations of conventional opaque footwear makes the user seem charmingly ungrounded and less burdened by reality.
Jelly shoes also have a vibrant eccentricity. They look more appropriate for a light-hearted prance than a stroll along the street. They push us to let go of our preconceived thoughts about clothing and just let loose, along with bubble hems. These rubber slides have a whimsical feel that is reminiscent of middle school delights like Jell-O, as seen by the squelchy sound they create when you step on them. Unusual foot jewellery is a wonderful escape from the daily grind at a time when a lot feels heavy.
They’re proven to be surprisingly adaptable in 2024. The Row’s release demonstrates how they liven up otherwise sophisticated clothes with a dash of personality. They provide waterproof protection and can resist uneven terrain thanks to their sturdy construction. Not only that, but they’re just really dumb. And a little more of that would be nice for all of us.
