It’s interesting to note that there is a lot of disagreement about whether or not socks should match trousers or shoes. I am aware that there is a lot of flexibility when it comes to selecting a pair of socks, however before we get started. Some guys—including myself—choose to completely forgo socks in favour of flashing their ankles all year round. Others want to make a statement with socks that resemble hot dogs. Still others decide to shoot the lights out with brilliantly coloured socks. We’ll address everything in a moment.

Tradition is the main topic of this post. The “proper” way to wear socks in situations where people don’t like hot dog socks, is almost anywhere other than behind a hot dog cart! It appears that there is no easy answer, despite extensive research and debate! Whoa! Nonetheless, I’m pleased to say that “your socks should match your trousers” is the common opinion. That’s all there is to it; if you were simply searching for a quick response, feel free to quit reading now.

The rationale behind this rule is rather straightforward. What you’re aiming for is a smooth transition from your shoe to the hem of your trousers so that there’s no noticeable colour break as your trousers swing to your overall sashay! This is the main guideline, and it ought to be followed whenever feasible. Feel free to match your socks to your shoes if you’ve paid out on a pair of cerise trousers but couldn’t find the ideal pair to go with them.

My recommendation is to completely disregard this guideline unless you are going somewhere extremely formal, like tea with Her Majesty the Queen! It’s a no-brainer because black trousers and black shoes are typically required for formal events! Your ensemble can become as boring as the grey blur above if you start adhering to the matchy-matchy rule!

Try to enjoy yourself while wearing socks if you must have them! I do not support hot dog socks; novelty does not equate to enjoyment. I generally advise against wearing novelty items like socks, ties, bow ties, pocket squares, etc.

All it takes to have some fun with your socks is to not take the aforementioned guidelines too literally. Allow your shoes and trousers to show a little bit of your individuality. A solid colour is far more effective at creating a statement than a pattern ever.
