Michael Jordan is not only a basketball player but a fashion symbol whose impact is not solely related to sport. Fashion observers have come to associate Jordan’s dressing code with sportswear as well as casual wear which has been an eye-opener for today’s world. From his groundbreaking sneaker line to his classic off-court looks, here are four of Michael Jordan’s most iconic fashion moments: From his groundbreaking sneaker line to his classic off-court looks, here are four of Michael Jordan’s most iconic fashion moments:

1. The Air Jordan Legacy:

Sneaker culture is a culture that has been experiencing tremendous evolution in terms of the meaning of sneakers.

Nike changed not only basketball but the entire sector of shoes when they introduced the first Air Jordan sneakers in 1985. The first Air Jordan shoe that Michael wore was a black and red color scheme which was against the NBA dress code leading to the ‘Banned’ logo that made them more appealing. This wasn’t just a sneaker that was used for performance, this was a fashionable product. Air Jordan line was successfully established to become a new cult of folks both in sports and fashion and continues being demanded among all sneakerheads. Jordan’s sneakers were a result of a partnership with Nike which became the hallmark of athlete-endorsed products and helped cement his position as an innovative dresser.

2. The Suit Game: Neoclassic and Neat

Besides basketball, the world knows Michael more due to his fashion statements, particularly his sophisticated and well-fitted suits. The event of which I’m thinking of is his performance at the 2009 Basketball Hall of Fame inductee ceremony. Jordan was dressed formally in a clean black double-breasted suit and the outfit fitted the tall stature of 6’6’’. ‘The combination with white shirt and black tie gave the correct note of elegant sophistication, ‘he said. Jordan wearing clean-cut and simple-looking suits has been a clear pointer to his good taste, and style that modifies the dressing code of athletes outside the field.

3. The Baggy Shorts Era: New Rules to the Game

The epicenter of this innovation was Michael Jordan in the late 1980s; he decided to wear what has today come to be known as ‘droopy’, or ‘overalls’ basketball short styles despite the commonly accepted ‘short’ basketball short styles. This shift not only modified the look of basketball uniforms but it also contributed to the arising of the streetwear fashion. Was there a better embodiment of a new age in basketball one that was relaxed, confident, and fashionable, all the same? It was Jordan’s influence that brought a change to the norm of what was acceptable athletic wear, which was now the standard that stretched beyond the basketball court.

4. The Golf Course Look: Business formal is the new casual trendy

Michael Jordan’s love for golf has also found its way into his fashion with him being seen wearing what is commonly referred to as golf apparel. For the last few years, Jordan has been spotted playing golf in rather casual, albeit elegant, golf-appropriate wear, including polo shirts, long shorts, and of course, his Air Jordan golf shoes. More about the designs are a well-ironed white polo shirt worn with matching khaki shorts with a designer cap and, oh yes, custom Jordans golf shoes. His style of dressing especially when it comes to golf wear is very casual yet very voguish and thus he is still a fashion icon even outside his basketball court.

Even today, ‘Michael Jordan’ is used to describe the impact of the legend far beyond the basketball court but also in the field of fashion. From the Air Jordan sneakers to athletic wear and off-court clothing, Jordan has been the innovator in the way people merge sports and fashion. His style regardless of whether it was a formal tuxedo or casual wear which included sportswear remains a precedent even today for athletes and lovers of fashion clothing. It has to be said that Michael Jordan is not only a sports legend, but a fashion trendsetter whose influence will be remembered throughout the years.
