Alia Bhatt recently made her second appearance at the Met Gala, donning a shirt adorned with genuine diamonds and an exquisitely created sari. The Heart of Stone star went to her Indian heritage for inspiration this time around, unlike when she made her red carpet debut in a Prabal Gurung gown last year. Wearing a mint-green sari custom-designed by Indian couturier Sabyasachi, Bhatt ascended the Met staircase with gems sparkling from atop her loosely braided hair to her train. In keeping with this year’s theme, which was named after and inspired by J.G. Ballard’s short tale The Garden of Time, the actor wore an ethereal ensemble that included a 23-foot-long train that was meticulously hand-embroidered with flowers using silk thread, glass beading, and semi-precious jewels.
Anaita Shroff Adajania, a seasoned stylist and frequent red carpet partner, helped Bhatt interpret the theme of this year’s Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion show at the Met. Before her red carpet debut, the actor explained the sari’s design, saying, “With its translucent, glass-like appearance, it’s not just a nod to the ethereal quality of the garden in Ballard’s story but also a tribute to the exquisite, enduring craft of sari-making.” Brimming with whimsical details like frills, tassels, and a scattering of sequins and diamonds throughout the flowing form, Bhatt’s design drew inspiration from the story’s visual elements, particularly the fantasy existence of Count Axel and his spouse. The sari and the jewelry incorporated into the bodice not only satisfy the glitz factor but also play into the theme of a mythical creature, a forest nymph wandering into the wilderness.
I was drawn to this style because of its sheer audacity—the way it combines avant-garde aesthetics with traditional craftsmanship. Given his commitment to blending contemporary sophistication with vintage charm, Sabyasachi felt like the ideal candidate to embody the Met Gala’s theme this year. After making his debut in 2022 alongside Indian heiress Natasha Poonawalla, this ensemble also represents the designer’s second appearance on the Met Gala red carpet. It gives me great pleasure to make the iconic Indian sari, which is crafted by hand using generations-old traditions that Alia Bhatt has honed over a lifetime of labor. She stands for the heritage and pride in Indian craftsmanship that she has devoted her professional life to advancing our country.
