We’ve become better at decorating our belongings in the last few years. blinged-up phone covers? quite fashionable. unusual purses adorned with keychains? the season’s declaration. Charms for shoes? Right back! Possibly the most significant development in this new age of sophisticated accessorising? Acquiring the skill of how to stack rings.
You know, there’s a distinction between haphazardly putting on rings to go out the door and arranging them carefully to create a particular appearance. Having a visually appealing collection of jewellery on your fingers allows you to express your individual style.
Haley Woodbury, co-owner and bespoke design specialist of Toronto-based fine jewellery store Anne Sportun, says, “It’s just an easy way to keep evolving.“You’re mixing disparate pieces that maybe no one else would have thought to mix before to create your own look.”
Does your stack rings need to have a theme? Which ones are off-limits? How do you maintain its balanced appearance? Here are some things to be aware of when stacking rings.
Identify the size of your ring.
Purchasing the correct ring size is an art, despite the fact that it may seem simple. According to Woodbury, “the more you add stack rings, the tighter it fits onto your finger.” “If you’re stacking, make sure you’re sizing up to avoid them squishing your finger and giving you an uncomfortable look or feeling.”
Although you can buy an at-home sizer on your own, Woodbury suggests visiting a jewellery store to get it evaluated by a qualified expert. (Anne Sportun provides this assistance without charge.) “A small amount of resistance is appropriate,” she states. “But not to the point where you have to apply lotion each time you need to remove your ring.”
Play with odd quantities and unusual forms of stack rings.
Haley Woodbury usually wears between three and five stack rings. In order to explore negative space, she enjoys layering in pieces with wavy, windy silhouettes and combining various shapes and finishes. “It’s crucial to break it up so that it appears like several distinct rings rather than just one large clump.”
Adopt a theme, but avoid going overboard with stack rings.
While the appearance of your rings shouldn’t be uniform, they should all seem to go together. For example, avoid wearing solely cool-toned rings if your band has blue sapphires in it. Woodbury also cautions against using colours that clash. (She suggests maybe avoiding wearing red and green unless you’re going to a holiday party.)
Additionally, use stones with distinct shapes if you are matching two rings with stones. As an alternative to layering only round stones, consider incorporating some baguettes or a marquise. According to Woodbury, “Those stones with different shapes can really help make your stack feel unique to you.”
Recognise which rings should not be stacked.
When it comes to stacking, rings with an excessive amount of depth disparity are a big no-no. According to Woodbury, certain rings weren’t made to stack, so you wouldn’t want a particularly deep, tall ring stacked with a really slim one because they would just seem out of balance.
For example, a ring with a big centre stone set low and integrated into the band will not blend well with other rings, she claims. “It will simply occupy the entire space on your finger.” Furthermore, the more the merrier when it comes to stacking. This takes us to the following point.
Fear not the “cluttered” fingers.
A super-stacked finger can yet seem stylish and uncluttered by experimenting with negative space and various forms. Woodbury finds the chaotic, untidy aesthetic appealing. She also doesn’t give a damn about which finger receives the rings. She will wear rings stacked on several fingers adjacent to one another and up to her knuckle.
It all boils down to how at ease you are with the way your rings fit on you. When in doubt, follow your instincts. It’s really personal, according to Woodbury. “You should wear the rings however you see fit if you feel a connection to them.”
