Imagine the following opulent scene: The hem of my loose jeans is dragging as I went to get a salad last week during my lunch break while in New York City. A corgi or a beagle could fit comfortably within the enormous Peter Do bag that is slung across my shoulder. Since my dress practically takes up space, it is difficult to overlook, and I can feel people staring at me from all sides. Of course, they are unaware that I’m testing out the oversized fashion trend that has been dominating the catwalks.
XXL shapes in clothing items like jeans, dresses, and suits have been seen on the runways by designers like Balenciaga, Peter Do, and Marc Jacobs. The look quickly gained popularity among A-listers. When Justin Bieber arrived at the Grammy Awards in a big Balenciaga suit complete with Crocs, the photo went viral. Celebrity stylists have noticed an increase in their clients embracing the roomy appearance. According to Zadrian Smith of the styling team Zadrian + Sarah, who now dress celebrities like Ariana DeBose, “we are seeing a return of ’90s trends in general, and we particularly love to see the reemergence of tremendously oversized pieces—they can be really fun to play with.”
I was intrigued by these strong outlines and questioned my ability to pull off the daring look as a non-celebrity. A huge pair of jeans is way outside of my comfort zone because I was a dedicated skinny jean wearer in the 2010s, but my fashion resolution for this year was to try new things. So, armed with my Baggy clothes and luggage and with the guidance of three professional stylists, I accepted becoming oversized for a week below. It turns out that there are a few techniques to pulling off the look, such as deciding which items to invest in, mastering layers, and taking proportion into account. According to Smith, all of these styling decisions prevent someone from drowning in their clothing.
JEANS ARE THE PERFECT ENTRY POINT
In 2020, Gen Z made the official declaration that skinny jeans were no longer in style. This summer, it’s all about the baggy fit. Following this month’s Balenciaga couture presentation in Paris, Bella Hadid sported a flawless pair. If you think about it, the oversized trend is best introduced with huge denim: It is an item you can wear with anything. You can create a powerful outfit by wearing it with a white tee that is more form-fitting, such as Bella’s cropped version. The key to huge jeans, according to Gabrielle Union’s stylist Thomas Christos Kikis, is that they must be extremely large throughout, save at the waist. “Put on a stiletto if you’re feeling intimidated by the proportion; a little bit of height and glitz helps to balance the volume.
When I tried on a pair of wider Closed x Michael Philouze jeans, I noticed that they quickly made my work button-ups feel cool and carefree. Compared to the typical straight-leg or slim jeans, they are a little more fashionable and edgy.
