The world’s pop princess, Britney Spears has been ruling the fashion world as soon as she popped onto the scene in the late nineties. Starting from the clipped hair and panties worn during the music videos, Britney Spears fashion has always been provocative and inspiring much like her songs. There is no doubt Britney Spears adopted some of the best fashion trends in the music industry that have made an indelible mark in the history of pop icons.
1. The Schoolgirl Outfit
One of the most memorable, or even the most memorable Britney’s image is the schoolgirl outfit she wore in her first video for the song “…Baby One More Time”. That white blouse tied around the waste, the gray checkered pleated skirt, and knee highs were familiar symbols and elicited many a mimic. This look was not only the trademark of the young Britney but also the memorable look of the late ‘90s pop princess.
2. The Red Latex Catsuit
Britney wore a skintight red latex catsuit which became very famous in the music video for the song ‘Oops!.. I Did It Again’. The unusual, futuristic look was appropriate for the up-tempo, fun, self-assertive ‘I’m a Pop Icon’ image Britney was cultivating. The red catsuit has been referred to as one of the most iconic looks that she has ever worn in her whole life up to date.
3. The Denim Dress
In 2001 AMAs with American Music Awards, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake, then her boyfriend also wore jeans of the same color. Britney’s strapless patchwork denim gown with knee-high boots, rhinestone-painted belt, and accessories were splendid showing the early 2000 fashion in its best flavor. This look has since then become a reference in discussions about the most memorable moments that occurred on the red carpet.
4. The Snake Performance Outfit
One can remember Britney’s “I’m a Slave 4 U” performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, 2001 for not only the moves but also her costume. She danced with a live albino python wrapped around her neck, arms, and shoulders- clad in only a green bra top and low-ride shining purple and blue shorts. This rather risqué performance proved that Britney has transformed not only her style but has developed as an artist.
5. The Wedding Dress
At the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards during the performance of “Like a Virgin”, Britney is likely to have taken the viewers by surprise when she recreated Madonna’s look by wearing a bridal mini dress and a bridal veil. The appearance that Britney made during the performance along with a kiss with Madonna turned out to be one of the most memorable moments in the history of VMA, and thereby established Britney more firmly in the pop culture realm.
6. The Black Sequin Bodysuit
Britney Spears’ black sequin bodysuit that she wore during her MTV VMAs performance of “Piece of Me” in 2008 was symbolic of her comeback. The leather-like bodycon dress was sophisticated and rebellious and represented her strength to come out of the shadows and sparkle despite all the adversities that she had to face. As for the outfits, this image marked Britney’s return and confirmed her place among the seven pop stars.
7. The Circus Ringmaster Look
In 2009, Britney toured using her “Circus” theme, she first wore a gorgeous ringmaster outfit. The red and gold jacket, fishnet stockings with thigh-high boots were somewhat thespian, but very fashionable to give the energy of her performances. This look did become associated with the tour and it proved that Britney could dress to impress but also entertain.
Styles for Britney Spears have changed in time as were her musical styles – and the impact on others has been equally powerful. For a long time whether she was just a teen idol or an image of a pop star Britney has always had her unforgettable and distinct look. With many memorable fashion moments that Britney is either setting styles or making powerful and vocal statements, her fashion statements continue to enthrall her fans globally.
