Most recently, we wrote an article about the women’s leather jacket, or more precisely about the reasons for its popularity. But then we didn’t tell a lot of interesting things: the article simply cannot be endless, and there’s a lot I want to tell. Therefore, today we are talking about the history of a thing that changed the idea of fashion – a beautiful leather jacket.

WHO WAS THE FIRST TO MAKE THE LEATHER JACKET FASHIONABLE?

Initially, a leather jacket was the clothing of the military, mainly drivers and pilots. All because of the moisture-repellent properties, ease of wearing, and, of course, the severity of the material. The military wore a leather jacket with buttons, something we are not at all used to today.

But a zipper was first attached to a leather jacket by a man who sold his products for five and a half dollars. This was about a hundred years ago. And the man who decided to make the perfect jacket for bikers was named Irwin Schott.

Bikers found it much more comfortable to wear leather jackets with zippers because they had to lean forward while riding. The buttons might have gotten in the way.

Although the leather jacket was originally an item of men’s fashion, it soon became a fashionable or even trendy item for a woman’s wardrobe.

THE LEATHER JACKET IN HOLLYWOOD AND ON THE SILVER SCREEN IN THE THIRTIES

In the thirties of the last century (and even now), fashion was largely controlled by Hollywood. And when Marlene Dietrich and Audrey Hepburn appeared to the world in their strict and very bold leather jackets, it felt like a stream of fresh air.

At the same time, the leather jacket became a symbol of female confidence.

There is a photograph where Marlene Dietrich very beautifully smokes a cigarette in a leather jacket. Looking at this picture, you understand why she was a star in her time and remains a style icon to this day.

From bikers and movie stars, the leather jacket was inherited by rock musicians and fans of the new musical movement. In the sixties, leather jackets were worn by young people, both men and women. It was a symbol of protest, freedom, and independence.

Then leather jackets began to receive the bold styles we are accustomed to today. Experiments began with zippers, sleeve fastenings, materials, colors, and inscriptions. Of course, not all of this became elements of mass fashion. But a lot remains on the catwalks to this day.

HOW DID THE LEATHER JACKET BECOME WHAT WE KNOW IT TODAY?

In the nineties, the era of the heyday of pop culture around the world, experiments began to be carried out on the leather jacket. Even more styles, even more design solutions. Wherever this item was included in a woman’s wardrobe.

And, perhaps, then for the first time in the history of its existence, the leather jacket became mainstream. And it has become the kind of clothing that absolutely everyone wears, especially in autumn and spring.
