If you want to project an air of old money, you’ve come to the correct location. It’s crucial to remember that achieving an old money,  expensive and elegant look isn’t only about what you wear; it’s also about how you present yourself. As a stylist, I will make stylish advice that will help you apply these concepts in your daily life. As a mindset coach and psychologist, I will also provide guidance on how to not just LOOK at old money, but also FEEL it, because mindset is ultimately important. To help you on your path, I’ve prepared a free video course called “The Old Money Mindset: A Guide to Achieving an Expensive and Elegant Look” that you can download:)

Allow me to briefly describe my background and why I am qualified to talk on this subject. Although I do not come from an old money family, it is something I hope to create for my own family. To be termed old money, you must have at least seven generations of wealth, which is practically impossible for me considering that my family was dispossessed during the Soviet era. However, my parents were able to create something fresh, and they have a Jewish-Old-Money worldview, which I share. This unique perspective enables me to provide vital insights into the realm of old money style and thinking.

#1. Quality Over Quantity

One of the most important aspects of dressing with an old money feel is to prioritise quality over quantity. This entails investing in timeless pieces manufactured from natural fibres such as wool, silk, and cashmere. Stick to basic, neutral colours that never go out of style, and avoid trendy, showy pieces that will rapidly become out of date.

Creating a capsule wardrobe with flexible pieces is an excellent approach to creating the old money look. Choose high-quality, well-made goods that can be mixed and matched in a rapid fashion that will break apart after a few uses. Remember that investing in high-quality things does not necessarily imply spending a lot of money. Vintage shops and consignment stores are great places to look for classic, well-made goods.

#2. Top Notch Details

To obtain an old-money style, pay close attention to the details of your outfit, such as the hardware on your accessories and the buttons on your garments. These minor touches may appear unimportant, yet they may make a tremendous difference in the overall appearance of your clothing.

When purchasing accessories like as handbags, belts, and shoes, seek for high-quality hardware, such as gold or silver-tone clasps and buckles. Avoid things with showy logos or excessive bling, since they might detract from an overall polished appearance. Instead, opt with simple, timeless patterns.

#3. Subtle High-End Clothes

If you want to spend in high-quality clothing to acquire an old-money look, there are several labels that provide modest, classic styles that ooze sophistication and elegance. These labels are noted for their meticulous attention to detail, use of high-quality materials, and flawless tailoring.

One such company is Ralph Lauren, which is famed for its timeless American style and classic designs. Other high-end, classic clothing companies include Brooks Brothers, Burberry, Loro Piana, Brunello Cucinelli, Goyard, and Bally. These brands provide a wide selection of apparel products, from blazers and trousers to dresses and accessories, all with a focus on quality, comfort, and refinement.

#4. Investment Pieces for Generation to Last

Investing in objects that will last for generations is a key part of creating an old-money look. While high-quality apparel and accessories are undoubtedly important, other investment products should also be considered. Rather than investing in trendy bags or other disposable fashion things, try purchasing something truly unique that will carry sentimental or monetary value for years to come. This could include passing down a family heirloom, such as a gold band with a gemstone, investing in art, or acquiring furniture that will become a prized family property. By investing in timeless, high-quality things, you may leave a legacy that will last for centuries.

#5. Confidence

Confidence is one of the most critical parts of pulling off an old-money look. No matter how costly your clothes or accessories are, if you don’t feel confident and comfortable wearing them, the style will fall flat. Confidence comes from within; it cannot be purchased or worn. However, by investing in high-quality, timeless pieces and paying close attention to detail, you can increase your confidence and feel wonderful in your ensemble. Remember that how you hold yourself is just as essential as what you wear, so stand tall, make eye contact, and radiate a sense of calm confidence. When you feel comfortable in your own skin, it will show in everything you do.

#6. Good Manners & Etiquette

Good manners and etiquette are vital for portraying an old-money image. This includes being polite and considerate in social situations, understanding how to behave at the dinner table, and being aware of social signs and expectations. It’s also about expressing gratitude and appreciation, whether by thanking someone for their time or writing a handwritten message of thanks. Dressing appropriately for the occasion is also important, such as avoiding high heels on a winter trek and not wearing a tuxedo to a casual event. It’s also crucial to avoid speaking too loudly or interrupting others’ conversations. As someone who is concerned about constructing an old-money image for themselves and their families, I have learnt firsthand the importance of good manners.

#7. Politness & Kindness

Politeness and politeness are critical components of projecting an old-money image. It is critical to be kind and respectful to others, including family members, friends, acquaintances, and strangers. Here are some basic ways to be courteous and kind:

  • Saying “please” and “thank you” frequently.
  • Holding open doors for others.
  • Offer your seat to someone in need, such as an elderly or pregnant woman.
  • Listening actively and participating in serious discourse.
  • When interacting with others, be careful of your tone and body language.
  • Being prompt and dependable.
  • Sincere compliments to others.
  • Exhibiting empathy and care for others.
  • Volunteering and contributing to your community.

#8. Limited Use of Color

When it comes to putting up a beautiful and stylish closet, colour should be used sparingly. This doesn’t imply you have to keep to black and white, but rather be deliberate in your colour selections. Neutral colours like blue, beige, grey, and white are classic and beautiful options that can be readily combined. Light and pastel colours are also associated with luxury, but it is critical to use high-quality textiles to avoid a cheap and fragile appearance.

#9. Education & Taste

Education and taste are necessary for living a luxurious and refined lifestyle. My family prioritised education since it is the only thing we cannot lose. It is not just about attending elite colleges or earning a degree, but also about keeping an open mind and being curious about the world around us.

A well-rounded education may include reading literature, travelling, attending cultural events, and engaging in discussions with people from various backgrounds and opinions. Taste, on the other hand, refers to a polished understanding of style, art, music, and design. It is about having a sense of quality and beauty, as well as the ability to enjoy the better things in life.
