Manik in Hindi, ruby is one of the most beautiful and amazing gemstones that not only draws attention because of the bright red color, but also the astrological significance. However, because of its high price and demand, the market is flooded with synthetic and imitation rubies that look almost identical but lack the same sparkle and energy of a real one. So the question is how to define the original ruby stone? The answer is through careful looking and performing several easy checks. Here’s a guide to the recognition of the real and fake ruby.

1. Examine the Color and Clarity

A real ruby gem has a vibrant, deep red color with a slight blue or purple tint – usually called “pigeon blood red.” If the color is too light, very pinkish, or rather dull, it may not be real. Also, while natural rubies are rarely entirely flawless and normally have small inclusions or tiny imperfections that can be barely seen through magnification, a completely transparent, flawless stone is probably synthetic or glass-filled.

2. Check the Hardness

On the Mohs Scale of Hardness, rubies are placed at a level of 9 just below diamonds. In other words, they are practically indestructible and can even very easily scratch most of the materials around them. To check this at home, do it cautiously by making a small scratch attempt on a glass sheet with your ruby. If the ruby remains intact but the glass gets scratched, it is probably a real ruby. Nevertheless, watch out not to damage the stone itself when you do this.

3. Conduct the Light Test

Put the manik stone under a torch or direct sunlight. The red parts of the light that will be reflected by the real ruby will be combined with the blue ones, giving the impression of a fiery inner glow of the stone. On the other hand, if you see it shining with a whole spectrum of colors, then it might be a fake product made from glass or other synthetic material. The red luster of natural rubies feels rich and soothing to the eye, not too flashy as it is with the fakes.

4. Look for Air Bubbles or Surface Marks

Once viewed under a magnifier, the glass-made fake rubies usually show tiny air bubbles and/or a rough surface, while the real ones have natural inclusions such as rutile needles or a crystal growth pattern named “silk”. This is even more reliable evidence that the gem is authentic since each one has its unique features.

5. Get It Certified

The best and surest way of finding out if the stone is a ruby is by having it tested in an accredited gemology laboratory. A gem report from trustworthy institutions such as GIA or IGI is the guarantee that what you have is natural and untreated.

Final Thoughts

A real ruby gemstone is no less than a spark of Nature and the Sun. You may wear it as a piece of art or for the astrological benefits, but first, always get a lab certification from a reputable source. Besides history and prestige, a true ruby will not only radiate your aura with beauty, but it will also going to be a source of strength, courage, and victory in your life.
