Summer is the season for swimming, beach trips, and barbecues. It’s also the time of year when you have to be careful about your skin. Sunburn, tan lines, dry skin – all can be summer skin care problems. But with a few simple skin care tips, you can keep your skin looking its best all summer long.
Protecting your skin from the sun is very important, of course, but there are other things you can do to make sure you enjoy the good weather, too. Here are the best skin care tips you can try.
1. Start by using a good moisturizer. This is really important in summer – apply your moisturizer right after you put on your make-up, before you shower, before you get dressed, and while you are still in bed. Moisturizers prevent your skin from drying out and help to prevent breakouts and blemishes.
There are different types of moisturizers, depending on what type of skin you have. For oily skin, choose a lightweight moisturizer. You might also choose a moisturizer containing humectants, to help your skin retain more water. If your skin is dry, choose a more heavy-duty moisturizer.
2. When you are using your moisturizer, don’t forget to apply it to your lips. This is especially important for those of us who tend to eat more and drink more in the summer. Dry lips can be embarrassing, so keep them moisturized.
3. Choose the right sunscreen. You don’t need the same level of protection in the summer as you do in winter, but you should still be careful to wear the right sun protection in the sun.
Choose a sunscreen that provides a minimum of protection, meaning you can use it in lower SPF numbers without feeling like your skin is burning. Apply sunscreen to your skin about 30 minutes before you go out, and don’t forget to apply sunscreen to your lips as well.
4. Wear a hat. The best thing to wear in summer is a wide-brimmed hat. Hats block out the sun and keep your skin protected from the sun’s rays.
5. When you are tanning, choose a self-tanner that won’t leave streaks. If you have very dark skin, choose one that won’t leave you looking orange. Also, be careful not to cover your entire face with the self-tanner – just cover your nose and chin. And be sure to rinse the self-tanner off once you are done tanning, before going to bed.
If you’re looking for a bit of a tan, you can easily get one without getting burnt. The trick is to find the right self-tanner for you. Some self-tanners are meant to be applied by the hand, while others need to be applied with a sponge or brush.
6. If you have dry skin in summer, choose a moisturizer that has a humectant in it. This type of moisturizer will help draw moisture to the skin, keeping it hydrated.
7. If you have sensitive skin in summer, choose a moisturizer that has added soothing ingredients. Try a moisturizer containing lactic acid, to help to calm and soothe the skin. A moisturizer containing soothing aloe, for example, can be very helpful.
8. Apply your night cream at night, before going to bed, and follow this with your moisturizer.

9. If you know you are prone to breaking out, choose a product containing a retinoid, such as Retin-A, Clarins®, or Aveeno® Acne Solutions Retinoid and Retinoid Night Balm. These products are effective at reducing the appearance of acne and preventing new breakouts. They also provide protection against the environmental factors that trigger the breakout.
10. Choose a moisturizer containing aloe vera. Aloe vera is rich in water and nutrients and can help to soothe and calm your skin.
