The greatest athletes in the world will undoubtedly be competing for gold in Paris at this year’s 2024 Summer Olympics, but they will also be serving up plenty of remarkable looks that are undoubtedly going to be magnificent from a fashion standpoint. Paris is the city of fashion, after all. Every region’s designers have been tasked with creating functional yet stylish uniforms for their national team’s showcase.

Some may argue that this year’s games should be seen more as fashion shows than as sporting events as the opening and closing ceremonies serve as significant stages for famous athletes and brands to display breathtaking outfits influenced by their cultures.

To present classic American style on a global platform at this year’s Olympics, Team USA enlisted Ralph Lauren. The CEO of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, Sarah Hirshland, stated in a news statement that Ralph Lauren “has once again created designs that not only capture the essence of American style but also embody the spirit and pride of Team USA.” The brand is stepping up the athlete’s style for the closing ceremony with a sporty moto-style jacket paired with white denim and a Polo shirt. At the opening ceremony, athletes will walk out in classic tailored blazers with red and white tipping and a striped oxford shirt worn with tapered jeans.

When designers Michel and Amazonka Choigaalaa unveiled their incredibly detailed Olympic outfits for Team Magnolia to wear at the opening and closing ceremonies, TikTok went into a frenzy. The exquisite costumes, which took more than 20 hours to complete, have rich symbolism, intricate gold embroidery, and a traditional silhouette that is reminiscent of the nation’s “deel,” or buttoned overcoat-like attire. Tasselled satchels and dangling earrings will be worn as accessories by female players. According to their Instagram, the designers aimed to “encapsulate profound cultural heritage and aspirations, resonating with themes of resilience, conquest, and cultural identity.” The goal was achieved.

With stylish, state-of-the-art racing apparel, Puma is assisting Jamaica’s track and field team in crossing the finish line. The nation’s signature colours, black, yellow, and green, are strikingly shown, while “thermoadapt” technology in the jacquard fabric allows for increased ventilation and helps runners lower their body temperatures for optimal performance on the track. “They are a symbol of pride for the Puma family, and we hope that they become a symbol of pride for Jamaicans this summer and long into the future,” Puma Chief Product Officer Maria Valdes said in discussing the significance of the pieces.

The addition of break dancing to the Olympic sports list is a welcome boost to the competition’s enthusiasm. The New Originals, an Amsterdam-based business, offers neon orange and white jumpsuits that combine vintage and futuristic designs, and Team Netherlands will be slaying it in them.

It should come as no surprise that the nation hosting the Olympics would like to elevate its uniform game to entirely new levels of style. The French fashion house, Carine Roitfeld, and luxury brand Berluti collaborated to create elegant royal blue tuxedos with ombre lapels that read “Bleu-Blanc-Rouge” for their athletes. Athletes may easily wear the sleeveless version of the tuxedo jacket straight off the opening ceremony stage and out for a night on the town, paired with either an ankle-length pair of pants or a knee-length silk skirt.

Sportswear company Lululemon collaborated closely with the Canadian athletic team, the Canucks, to design stunning red jerseys for the Olympic and Paralympic games. The brand took into account the needs of the Paralympic athletes by emphasising fit, function, adaptability, and thermal comfort. “The print across the Opening Ceremony kit celebrates the diversity of Canada and interprets the art, architecture, and nature found throughout the nation,” Lululemon said in a press release. “Each icon in the print is a small reminder of home, intended to create a sense of connection and pride for athletes getting ready to compete in Paris.”

The ombré green and gold colour scheme on every item of Team Australia’s uniform represents the country’s national colours, and it is made to fit a variety of body shapes and athletic needs. Paul Fleming and David Bosun, two local artists, created whimsical prints that pay tribute to Indigenous tribes and accentuate the uniforms. Women can wear a pleated skirt or a double-breasted blazer with khaki shorts, while males will be dressed in a blazer and shorts.
