Fashion is not about being seen, it’s about being remembered.
It was an hour before an elegant gallery opening I had been working on for months on a rainy evening on a Tuesday! The room was spotless, the champagne was iced, and, looking into my closet, I was totally disheartened. All of my possessions were as if they were clinging to the body of another person. I wanted to have something that had a lot of meaning, but no noise.

I then came out with the sage green knit dress.
It was not loud and attention-seeking. It didn’t need the bright colours, sequins, or the structure to take up space. Rather, it had a confident, though not boisterous, presence. It was a delicate, metallic-kissed swirl of threads, dancing in a harmonious blend of olive and silver, a shimmering in the soft lamplight of my bedroom. It was not so much about getting dressed as it was about donning armor created in the style of beauty.
The design was an excellent example of tension and balance. The collarbones were revealed by the off-the-shoulder neckline, creating a nice sense of vulnerability, but immediately counterbalanced by the long, fitted sleeves that brought the whole ensemble to a sophisticated level. The key to this was, however, in the waist: a wonderfully draped, asymmetric tie-down, falling down into a natural, wrap-around skirt. It literally wrapped me around my curves!
As I got to the event, there was the usual social performance going on—people trying to outdress each other, outglamour each other. Then, when I walked into the room, things changed. Mentally, I didn’t have to break into discussions. The outfit was all the work for me. The pair was simple with thick gold hoops, a slender necklace, and uncomplicated clear heels, and it had just no frills, but was all the same, mesmerizing.
A designer stopped me near a main exhibit and indicated that the draped fabric. She said the material resembles “liquid slate. “Mysterious and so well-founded. The best of all compliments was the one this time. Amidst the ubiquitous black cocktail dresses and transient fads, the wise knit had become a symbol of confident fashion.
The most impactful style statement that I made that night was to be authentic. A well-suited outfit is not merely an outfit; it is your essence. This is a dress that is still a part of my wardrobe and serves as a reminder that elegance doesn’t have to be loud. It merely waits, allowing the world to go round it.
