When people ask me what my favourite aspect of my work is, I usually respond that it’s the excitement I get when I realise I’ve just discovered fashion trends or something novel that I can’t wait to share with all of you. That being said, I don’t think you should adopt fashion trends just because they seem trendy; instead, they should resonate with you in a way that will make you want to wear them long after their day in the limelight for style has passed.
Once more, I rarely respond specifically when people ask me which trends are worth investing in. I point them towards colour trends instead. Colour fashion trends move more slowly than other trends because, well, there are only so many of them, and as a result, they usually last longer than individual pieces. We all know that fashion is cyclical, and colour trends tend to resurface pretty rapidly. You may therefore be confident that the aforementioned colours will be in style once more if staying current is vital to you.
THE TOP COLOUR FASHION TRENDS OF 2024
1. ALMOST YELLOW
Although the phrase “quiet luxury” may not be as popular as it was in the middle of the previous year, the style, which is primarily defined by anti-trend, minimalist, and classic pieces, has left a lasting impression on the colour fashion trends for 2024. You’ll find brown, which belongs to the quiet-luxury colour category, farther down my list. One more? light yellow. The yellow tone of this shade is so subdued that it can appear as a deep cream in certain lighting conditions and as a beige in others, making it something of a new neutral. I would contend that its versatility makes it a prudent choice for colour investing. It makes sense, in my opinion, why its runway appeal has grown so quickly.
2. PALE BLUE
The spring/summer 2024 runways showcased a wide range of blue hues, but one particular light blue tint caught the attention of fashion editors the most. Sky blue may be the most “fashionable” colour of the year when styled with a variety of clashing hues, such as cherry red (more on that in a moment) and zesty neons. One of the few colours in the kaleidoscope that looks good on everyone, regardless of skin tone or hair colour, is this one.
3. EVERY ORANGE
“Peach Fuzz” was recently named the Colour of 2024 by the colour institute Pantone, and it’s obvious that the spring and summer of 2024 served as inspiration for the choice. In addition to delicate peach hues, orange emerged as a recurrent theme on the runway, appearing in pieces from Carven to Bottega Veneta, where delicate chiffon accentuated the delicate apricot tones.
4. STEEL GREY
Alright, I understand what you’re thinking—grey isn’t exactly fashionable right now! I get that, but it’s unquestionably a noteworthy tone given how frequently it appeared in so many ensembles along the entire range of runways. The styling is crucial in this case; donning all-grey ensembles is probably one of the easiest runway trends to copy because most of us already own enough grey clothing to pull it off. Still, there are lots of stylish options if you’d like to splurge on something new to honour grey’s recent rise to fashion prominence.
5. CHERRY RED
While pink may have been the hue of the year, as we get closer to 2024, we’re seeing a shift away from pink and towards red tones. Bright red, which is typically seen as a more sophisticated and grown-up colour, has been making an appearance in the fashion world as coats and knits. Naturally, these are still valuable purchases, but by summer, there will be an unprecedented amount of red dresses!
6. CHOCOLATE BROWN
Brown is the ’90s trend with the greatest longevity out of all those that have returned in recent years. Brown is back and better than ever this season. From boots to bags to shoes to clothes, this trend is expected to last well into 2024. Just ask Loewe, Ferragamo, Givenchy, Gucci, Hermès, Max Mara, Michael Kors, and Saint Laurent, whose entire spring/summer collection featured the colour.
7. SNOW WHITE
Like with the grey example above, I’m sure some of you will argue that white isn’t a “trend”. It’s timeless! It is ageless! But that’s where its power rests. Designers experimented with white in a variety of materials, including cotton, leather, chiffon, silk, and wool, which made it feel even more fresh. This year, we should wear white in a variety of ways, piled up. Even though it’s spring/summer, there were a lot of gorgeous white dresses to look at, which makes me believe that the market—both high-street and high-end—will place a lot of emphasis on this classic. For the time being, satisfy your need for white ensembles with knit dresses, coats, and tailoring.
8. PISTACHIO GREEN
Last year, green proved to be a big colour trend with grass-green shades sprouting throughout the collections. For 2024, designers have continued their exploration of the colour but leaning towards, as the rest of the line-up suggests, a more subtle interpretation. Call it sage, pistachio laurel, celadon or, well, light green, that’s up to you. So long as you wear it, that’s what matters.
9. MIRROR SILVER
Silver has had to be among the biggest fashion comebacks of the last several seasons. The metallic shade had long since been replaced by gold (and, briefly, rose gold). Following a cautious comeback in jewellery, silver made a huge splash in the world of fashion, appearing in everything from dresses to shoes to pants (the now-unattainable jean-style pieces from Hush, H&M, Marks & Spencer and Khaite). If you’ve already invested, you’ll be happy to learn that silver is a full-fledged obsession in 2024 rather than merely a fad.
