Yo Fashonation. It’s time to embrace the past. In the ever-evolving fashion world, what’s old is often new again. This year, we’re witnessing a resurgence of retro fashion trends making a stylish comeback on the runways and streets alike. From nostalgic references to past eras to timeless pieces that transcend time, let’s delve into the top 7 vintage fashion trends that are taking center stage in 2024.
The world of Vintage Fashion
The world of vintage style is a classy old tale that never goes beyond trend. Even though I am not that much of a fan of vintage, it has saved me a few times (lol). However, for many people, vintage styles are their go-to fashion trend. Therefore, we can say it has come to stay. Who knew our forefathers’ or ancestors’ fashion would always be in vogue?
There are certain vintage styles I can’t do away with, but my sister complains about me being old school. I just replied, “You have no fashion sense.” Anyway, let’s go to the main reason why we are here.
Top 7 Vintage Fashion Trends making a comeback in 2024
1. Power Shoulders
Simply put, outfits with big, exaggerated, or puffy shoulders are called power shoulders.
Bold shoulder silhouettes reminiscent of the 1980s are back in vogue. Blazers, dresses, and tops with exaggerated shoulders are making a statement this year, adding an empowering edge to any ensemble. However, one has to be very careful when it comes to styling. Exaggerated power shoulders do not need any additional layers of “sauce.”
There are different ways to style power-shoulder outfits. For example, if you’re like me and prefer blazers with puff shoulders, (yeah, for added effect, lol.), put a belt on the outfit to make your shape look like an hourglass. To make the big shoulder look more modernly vintage (as I like to call it), wear it with casual clothes like jeans or leather pants (both skinny and wide-leg pants look good with it). If you’re petite (again, like me), it’s better to leave your jacket or coat open.
I’m not really a fan of dresses with puff shoulders because of the way they make me look (lol) however, they too have their own classy style if you can style them very well.
2. Psychedelic Prints:
Bringing back the colorful styles from the ’60s and ’70s, psychedelic prints are making a comeback. Imagine bright swirls, cool shapes, and bold colors that add fun to your clothes. When I think about this kind of print, I think of hippie outfits. This trend is for you if you like bright and bold colors incorporated into your outfit.
Honestly, it takes a lot of guts and style to pull off bold colors. In Nigeria, people don’t mind their business, so the way you dress will determine how you’re addressed, and it scares me when I want to pair my orange dress with something (lol). Especially with old people (lol). I kid you, not guys, If you want rock-bold colors, then bravo to you. Some examples of psychedelic prints are:
3. Patchwork denim
This style, which was popular in the ’70s, is coming back in style. Patched-up denim clothes give a fun and unique look to the classy fabric, whether it’s jeans, jackets, or skirts.
Anything denim makes me happy. These are the easiest and classiest street fabrics you can get. Not only are they trendy but they are also springy (lol). I’m telling you guys that if you want to step up from the floral pattern of spring, then a patchwork denim outfit is the next go-to style.
4. Vintage Florals
Pretty flower patterns that remind us of the past are coming back. From tiny prints to big flowers, old-style flower patterns make dresses, tops, and skirts feel romantic and feminine. However, just because I say feminine doesn’t mean men cannot wear these vintage floral outfits. Vintage fashion for guys doesn’t necessarily have to be too positioned.
Furthermore, the floral pattern of vintage is certainly the trend for this spring season. I love dressing according to seasons because then you get to show your inner nature fashion (get it, lol). Whether it is for work, an event, or even casual wear, these vintage floral styles can certainly be included in your wardrobe.
5. Retro Sportswear:
Are you an athlete or just a sporty kind of person? If yes, then I’m glad you stopped by because vintage sportswear from the 80s and 90s is making a cool comeback.
However, just think tracksuits, windbreakers, and sneakers with bold logos and vibrant color-blocking, perfect for adding a sporty-chic vibe to your everyday looks.
I work for a company that requires a lot of standing and walking. And so, because of this, I’ve got to always be in flats or sneakers because, well, I am a quality control officer. So, retro sportswear has been one of my go-to outfits for work.
For example,
6. Crotchet Craze
With crochet, one can channel their inner bohemian sense of style. When I was in university, I would pass by the store of a woman who dabbled in crochet outfits. They were always hanging it on a mannequin and I remember thinking they looked awesome. In Nigeria where the sun is hotter than the earth (lol), this is one style that will be perfect. And guess what? It’s not just for ladies.
7. Bucket hats
Yeah, guys, bucket hats were really something back in the day and even without mentioning it, they are still widely used by a lot of people. I especially prefer bucket hats to face caps because of the stylish updo. Bucket hats are a unique kind of vintage fashion trend that we can’t escape.

8. Oversize sunglasses
This is one trend I’ve been seeing very commonly. Apparently, it was a trend in the old days (lol). I guess since normal-sized sunglasses protect us from sun rays, then the oversized ones would protect us from the sun itself (hahaha). Honestly, they are kind of weird, but then again, everyone has their own style of fashion.
Furthermore, according to Banton frameworks, oversized ’70s style glasses are back in fashion for 2024 and have been seen on many celebrities, such as Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. Who said vintage fashion couldn’t be embedded in frameworks?
In addition to these 7 trends, many other vintage fashion trends are making a comeback in 2024.
