Autumn/Winter 2023-24 Designers used Fashion Month to experiment with and push the boundaries of menswear. With the rising fusion of conventionally feminine codes put inside men’s pieces, gender boundaries continued to melt.

Many designs were inspired by a spirit of fun and nostalgia for youth, resulting in a heightened sense of personal expression in menswear.

Fashion Month 1

Acne Productions

Jonny Johansson, the collection’s creative director, aimed to shatter the conventions of traditional masculinity by fusing the hyper-masculine and ultra-feminine. Using the caveman as a starting point, harsh mannish features served as the foundation for integrating feminine contrasts.

To herald in a new era of expression for men, second skin T-shirts and leather biker pants were contrasted alongside transparent lace and shearling, while daywear elements were braided into experimental eveningwear.

Fashion Month 2

Anderson, JW

JW Anderson, who was also involved in gender discussions, pondered the nature of ‘packing’ persons or labeling them. Models in underwear waited to be ‘packed’ into clothing followed by guys modeling ruffled shorts, minidresses, and skirts.

Pillow inserts in sweaters, exaggerated loops on trousers, and the reintroduction of the frog Wellington boot in clog form all contributed to a mood of subversive nostalgia and fun.

Louis Vuitton

Fashion Month 3

At Louis Vuitton, menswear was rethought, this time including sport and streetwear themes that have become cornerstones of the modern wardrobe. Casual tracksuits, sweatshirts, and sneakers were treated with the same reverence as the atelier suit.

A collaboration with Kidsuper’s Colm Dillane saw his infantile drawings spliced into patchwork and jacquards spliced into formal tailoring and athleisure pieces, carrying on Virgil Abloh’s heritage of cherishing one’s inner kid.
